Well I did the latest Di2 firmware update yesterday and afterwards my Ultegra 6870 rear derailleur had dissapeared ! Frantic checking of connections and trying on another bike to prove levers and cables were ok proved it was the rear mech itself. All was working well prior to the update and searching the net led me to someone on here who had a similar issue in February. Long story short – I have had to purchase a comms unit to reset errors from Shimnao via Chainreactioncycles this morning ! Not a happy bunny , so thank’s alot Shimano ! Feeling quite mad at the moment re this !Would have been cheaper to get a new rear mech !   🙁

Most bike shops would have the kit and are normally happy to help free of charge (take beer or biscuits)

I bought a pce1 when I got my Di2 first bike. If you want to upgrade firmware either take it to bike shop or buy the proper kit. Btw all updates have been perfect on my Di2 bikes,

My di2 will never be plugged in to my pc. No need. It works. Experience with garmins becoming more buggy after “updates” makes me too nervous of software patches.

    Hang on. Shimano provides

Hang on. Shimano provides updates which make your very expensive electronics useless and mean you have to fork out for an extra bit of kit to have a functional bike again?

    Wtaf?

And you’re paying it too? I’d be on to Trading Standards!

This just happened to me!  Anyone aware of any other solutions?  My LBS quoted me $250cdn for PCE1!

    About the bluetooth kit. I

About the bluetooth kit. I have already faced several times statement that “native” bluetooth in some cars refuses to work, giving out this or that breakdown. In general, in such cases, as for me to help come kits, sometimes the reason lies in the electronics and replace it – being a rather expensive pleasure, while there a huge number of manufacturers of bluetooth kit.  And you can use them as a temporary solution.

Yes I saw the add on Ebay for that. as an Engineer I always like to buy the correct tool for the job and hence will keep the kit.I have thousands of tools and someone in the family will get a cracking inheritance 😉

Can’t you get Bluetooth connectivity on Di2?

Yes, but you need an extra box for that. I’d imagine that flashing the firmware with bluetooth would be the same as flashing via USB i.e. if the rear derailleur reports an error, then you’d need the SM-PCE1 to reset the error.

Recieved the Shimano SM-PCE1 today – plugged it in and reflashed the firmware to the rear mech and now all working correctly 🙂  An expensive solution to something that Shimano created !!! Fortunately managed to get the unit for  £135 all in , £50 off the original price so now added to my Di2 connectors.

You can probably recoup some costs by selling it on EBay. I did see someone hiring out an SM-PCE1 on EBay – something like £12 for a weeks use. You could always try doing that to get some cash back.

Doesn’t help, but this is why I don’t update the firmware on mine.  It’s not like software running on a computer with connectivity where we are worrying about vulnerabilities or anything like that – unless you are dead set on some new functionality or experiencing a bug – then I’d say leave well alone.
