I've just been trying to get insurance for my new bike: at a machine value of c.£4500, kept and used in a rural area, specialist insurers were in the range £380-450pa. Painful. But I've just added it to my household insurance (NFU) for £96, which is much more like it.
Many thanks .
As you state financially it would be difficult to take the loss I would carefully check any insurance stipulations.
I would sugest that home insurance can be ok in some instances but double check!
Specialist bike insurance normally has a more stipulations but are much easier to deal with if those stipulations are met. (in my experience)
If you can I would try to get substancial locks kept at either end of your commute. Make sure they conform to the correct standards for your insurance as well as making sure your storage at work has a defined 'imovable object' to lock the bike to. It can be difficult with work storage as a room at work can be defined as public space.
Over the years I have used many specialist insurers and most of the companies are very small which makes them personable. I can recomend Yelow Jersey and Bikmo as favorites.

sounds like you just need to get it added to your home insurance policy.
