Mid-70s Peugeot and Parts

    Hello.  I picked up a vintage Peugeot bike–possibly a mid-70s PX-10 (see pictures).  I love it and want to refurbish it as much as possible, but not necessarily restore it with original components.  I’m more interested in economical, high quality, attractive parts, rather than restoring it to its original glory.  I’m looking for everything–brakes, derailleurs, bottom bracket, crankset, down tube shifters, metal top tube cable housings.  Everything.  I know this may be problematic since it’s vintage and French (i.e. it has non-standard measurements).

    Firstly, can anyone confirm the model and year?  Also, any information about the wheels?

    Secondly, any suggestions on where to find replacement parts?  Again, they don’t need to be the original components.  I found Steel Vintage and Vintage Velo to start.  And, any recommendations on specific parts–particulary a bottom bracket, crankset, derailleurs, and brakes?

    Lastly, I may decide to replace the downtube shifters with modern shifter brakes.  Does anyone have experience with this?  Any insight is much appreciated.

    Very nice bike, I’m not entirely sure why there’s tape wrapped around the stays and top tube, but you need to see what’s underneath before you do anything else!

    If you did decide to modernise it a little – to make it easier to use day to day, for instance – then brake shifters, an indexed rear derailleur (look for v.late 80s early 90s stuff, still looks relatively period) and possibly a 7 or 8 speed freewheel with a 28t cog (8 speed can be a bit too much of a squeeze on some bikes). 

    If the bike was sold in uk originally then it ought to have a british bottom bracket, but tbh bikes of this era don’t usually need a new BB.

    It is going to be expensive job to bring that back to life though.  Good luck.

    it looks a bit late 70s/early 80s but doesn’t really matter, you could have a go at finding it on here. http://www.peugeotshow.com/

    Don’t do a modern ‘upgrade’ is my advice, clean it and replace the rear d, wheels, seatpost/saddle/bar tape/pedals

    Get rid of the tape wrapped around the stays, fluted seatpost, choose whether you want to go with the Dia Compe or Simplex.

    You can have a compact chainset should you need/want it and still be within L’eroica rules, Stronglight 99 gives you the possiblity of a 28T inner if required, this helps if you can’t source a freewheel with a really big sprocket if you fancy taking it up and down dale.

    Hopefully the BB isn’t french threaded can be costly finding a replacement if the one in situ isn’t okay.

    Swapping downtube shifters

    Swapping downtube shifters for STI/Ergo levers is easy enough – you can bolt on the cable housing to the same stubs you take the downtube levers off.

    As matthewn5 notes, the hubs for 8/9/10/11 speed cassettes is a bit wider but widening a steel frame is straightforward (and you can squeeze a 130mm hub into a 126mm space without re-spacing the frame – it’s just a bit of physical struggle so choose puncture-resistant tyres!)

    Now, does anyone have a 24mm seatpin lying around for me…

    Why change what’s on there?

    Very unlikely to be a PX10, even with the Nervex lugs. Many more exist than were ever made đŸ˜‰

    I’d go for:

    1. Campag Chorus 9 speed. Every bit as good as Record (aka identical bar the label) and still cheap. Lovely crisp shifts. But you’ll need to spread the rear triangle probably from 126 to 130, which can stuff up the alignment. If you’re planning to have it painted, sent it to Ellis Briggs in Skipton, they can also spread the rear triangle, put in a new brake bridge, make sure it’s all aligned, and chase out the threads. They did a nice job on my Columbus SLX frame.

    or

    2. Campag Victory. Still inexpensive, one level below Nuovo Record/Super Record. You won’t need to change the rear triangle.

    or

    3. Vintage Shimano 600 tricolour. People love it.
