Hi,

I’m in the process of building up a Planet X Maratona self build project, and have come into a technical issue with the headset…  To the best of my judgement the fork has teh appropriate angled suface for the baring to contact directly without a crown race, but ive spoken to PX and their chap seemed to think it doesnt despite my indication that teh race would never sit correctly and would damage steerer.

Anyone got a Maratona that could drop their fork a touch and check the lower bearing situation?

It must be the wrong bearing that either PX recommended or that was sent by the supplier then because it doesn’t seat at the bottom of the steerer (see pic). Looks like I need to invest in some digital vernier calipers and measure it for myself.

The only thing is, looking at it it seems the bearing itself would have to be extremely ‘thin’ for it to be wide enough in the inner diameter to allow it to sit snugly right at the bottom of the integrated crown race and narrow enough for it to seat in the head tube…

Will order the calipers, measure both diameters and report back.

Thanks again and please let me know if you have any more thoughts or you’ve had a similar experience with this type of integrated bottom crown race on a carbon steerer.

If the fork is a tapered tube
If the fork is a tapered tube, you just drop the bearing onto the carbon/alloy tube. it’s the same on my Tripster V2.

That definitely looks wrong.

That definitely looks wrong. I’ve got a frame with an integrated crown race and there is no gap between the top of the fork and the bottom of the headtube.

As long as the integrated race is fully engaged with the lower bearing there probably won’t be an issue but it does look untidy. The race won’t wear because it shouldn’t move once the headset is preloaded.

Hi,

Did you ever establish what the answer was as I have a similar issue. I understand that the crown race is built into the fork but even though I didn’t fit the crown race from the headset there still seems to be a large gap between the head tube and the fork – perhaps 3mm.

I used an FSA C 40NO 42 ACB which was recommended by PX. I sent them a photo after I’d fitted the fork and they seemed to think that this gap looked correct, but seems wrong to me…

Any help gratefully received.
