I’m looking into buying an aero helmet (giro air attack) from a kask mojito or buying a pair of carbon shimano r170 shoes from the R065 shimano shoes which are the same weight as the carbon shoes only without the ratchet system. They are roughly the same price because I would be buying the shoes used and the helmet new. Which one will be a better buy and make me faster?

I draw the opposite

I draw the opposite conclusion from the same observation. Look at the profile of a round bar to an aero bar, just makes sense. Maybe just a few watts, but I bet those are reliable every ride.

 

You can’t always wear your best aero top, deep aero wheels, aero helmet. You can always have your aero bars on. Also they look baller and fast, give you a bit of motivation.

Look at the profile of a round bar to a flat bar.  I cant see much gain to be made there in the real world.

Probably better off buying a tight fitting jersey or ducktaping your ears back.

If I had some cash sitting about to spend on free speed I’d probably take a punt on some aero bars. Aerotundo or whatever? Something on sale. Zipp maybe has something.

I once arrived at a time trial only to discover I had left my shoes at home. Rode it in trainers. I wasn’t any slower.

In theory the aero helmet should make you marginally faster, but this requires you to stay in a suitably aero position and this isn’t going to happen in real life. Maybe you’ll gain a few seconds with it, but there are easier and cheaper ways to do this. Most involve training. If you really want to buy some equipment to improve your speed, wheels and tyres make the biggest difference.

What training are you doing ? Look at that first. 

 

Trainerroad is about £10 a month ?  You can get a lot of improvement for that. Aero helmet – nuffink.  I have one (bought as I thought it’d be warmer in winter – not really proven that either).

Am I faster than I was ? Not that I can tell.  

 

If you don’t race then you really dont need an aero helmet.

 

If you do race then I’ll assume youve done all the training first.
