Ok, I’m sure I must be doing something stupid, but I can’t figure out what…

I’m simply trying to remove a SRAM force chainset from a bike I bought recently. I know the non-drive-side crank should self-extract with an 8mm Allen key.  However,  when I try that, instead of the bolt pushing against the cap that sits over it and removing the crank, instead the whole assembly – bolt and cap – unscrews.

I’ve tried tightening the cap as much as possible, and greasing the head of the bolt. Nothing’s worked yet.

I’m currently waiting for a decent dose of Loctite to set before trying again, but do any of the experts out there have any bright ideas if that doesn’t work either?

Got home tonight, got the 8mm allen key out again – without a huge amount of hope – and gave it a go to see what difference the threadlock had made.  Result… one crank removed!

Seems the bog standard Loctite was enough in the end.  Thanks to everyone for their suggestions – much appreciated.

Better to pay a few quid and get it done at the bike shop, at least you will have piece of mind.  if something goes wrong during the diy you’ll be gutted. Just something to bare in mind pal. 

Most things are easy to do on a bike. Anywhere around the bottom bracket isn’t. IMO

Bikebot – thank you – had no idea threadlock came in different strengths, so I was just using the standard stuff… That’s another line of attack, then.

Apparently SRAM use green (high strength) to lock the caps in.  Checking as of course most bike use is low strength, just to stop things rattling loose.
