    Hi all,

just looking for opinions on 9 speed cassettes and chains.

Is there going to be much benefit in getting the ultegra cassette and KMC light/superlight chain over the Sora cassette and standard KMC chain?

I’ve recently started racing and I am going to the Alps for a week’s riding- just for some background to my cycling. I’m not exactly a weight weeny, my only bike being an aluminium Giant Defy 3 with Sora groupset.

Is there enough of a performance/durability benefit to justify spending double the money on the better components?

    Cheers in advance

You can still get 9 speed

You can still get 9 speed Ultegra on wiggle http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra-6500-9-speed-cassette/ but my advice would be to just go for the standard 9 speed Shimano cassette which should provide all the performance you need.

More like, where do you even

More like, where do you even get 9-speed Ultegra cassettes nowadays? It’s been at least three groupset generations since.

With chains I wouldn’t necessarily get super-light stuff. I’d rather spend more for durability. Fortunately for you, KMC’s regular X-series chains are pretty durable as is.

I ran a KMC X10 as stock equipment, and I’m now running an X10EL (extra light) simply because I can’t find the plain X10 where I live. Neither chain has had problems.

    No.
    No.

Get the cheap one unless the Ultegra is a bargain. I use Ultegra chains on my commuter, but only because they’re so cheap. I buy whatever cassettes are cheapest at the time.
