Using a Garmin without maps

Hello all,

I'm in South America and have brought my Garmin 810 with me to use on a few rides. I only just realised that I only have European maps on it.

If I record a ride will the Garmin log the location and route I have taken on a map? I know I can't see it on the Garmin itself.

Thanks in advance!

The garmin will record where you went and then overlay that onto a map when you upload it to Garmin Connect or Strava or wherever.  It would be just like you have one of the lower specced models without maps (200, 500 etc).

You can plot routes you want to follow on a computer and send them to the garmin and it will give you a line to follow, but without any other maps shown.
