Whilst recently having a short trip with the missus I persuaded her to have a go overland instead of the Metro. I joined http://bycyklen.dk/en so I could easily access the bikes as a 'pay as you go' member. The rides cost approx £3 per hour and one membership can hire 2 bikes on the same account.
The bikes have electric assist if you want it, 3 speed and variable seat height adjust. They are solidly built with belt drive, automatic lights. The most convenient bit is the on board computer with booking/login functions and comprehensive navigation of the city.
Travelling around is easy, Copenhagen being pan flat. Negotiating the junctions is different to the UK, you don't cross into the centre of the lane but cross junction on the right and then go over the junction when the other lights change (if that makes sense) The navigation always takes you to a safe junction so you don't cross the flow of traffic. I didn't see anybody abuse the safety protocols whilst cycling, everyone obeys the rules. The manner of riding is very relaxed, we travelled around at 15 - 20kph.
The majority of the city there are segregated lanes with a beautifully smooth surface of 2.5metres wide. Priority given to cyclists mostly. Cyclists have to give way to pedestrians at crossings. Road layout looks complicated but soon becomes second nature.
The downsides we experienced was when travelling along roads where no segregated lanes existed we had to deal with close passes from vehicles noticeably from taxis!
In comparison to cycling in London (again briefly) there is no urgency to rush about, with a relaxed pace from everyone.
If you're travelling to Copenhagen have a go at cycling there, I thoroughly recommend it
