One of my bikes runs 9 speed Shimano Tiagra and I will soon need a new cassette and chain.

Previously I have been buying HG50 Tiagra Cassettes but see both Wiggle and Chain Reaction selling older 9 speed Ultegra cassettes which are three times the price

Aside from the weight saving (about 60g I think), is there any benefit to putting the Ultegra cassette on or am I just as well with the cheaper Tiagra ones?

I don’t race or do sportives but do put in about 250km a week, including one bigger ride at weekends.

I’ve never found much differennce in longevity but if you have an aluminium freehub, the sprockets on the Tiagra will gouge into the freehub and might become difficult to remove. The Ultegra will be lighter too.

ultegra cassettes have the
ultegra cassettes have the larger sprockets mounted on an aluminium spider which is less liable to cut into your freehub than tiagra. The surface finish is nicer on ultegra but they both shift as well IME.

Not worth the extra. IIRC the difference in weight for the cassettes is less than 60g, the figures I saw were almost identical. I weighed two 12-25t Tiagra cassettes, both were 232g.

KMC X9-93 chain is £10 posted from Hopkinson cycles on ebay. As good as Shimano (which are made by KMC) and include the quicklink.

The theory is the Ultegra will be better made from better stuff and will last longer.
My totally un-scientific opinion is that the difference will be marginal; I now use Tiagra chains instead of 105 and they last exactly as long.
