Winter bike issues – Specialized Diverge SW – I’ve ridden around 2000 all weather miles since purchase in November:

Creaking in bottom bracket started early summer, but has been ignored as I’ve ridden other bikes through summer.

Started riding again for the recent downpours, so last week I replaced the chain which was getting towards the end of it’s life, then I started to get chain jump – quite badly.
So I replaced the cassette, it improved, but still get the crunch when I put the power down.
Took it to LBS, they adjusted my derailleurs, and replaced a very worn cable inner&outer – Better again, but still happens occasionally.

I’ve now realised I have lateral play (2-3mm) in the cranks.

So, my question – is it likely that the BB is causing the crunch & chain jump? Or am I looking at a knackered freehub too?

Cant think what else could be wrong but feel free to make suggestions!

    Sounds like knackered
Sounds like knackered bearings, press fit bearings are great for an ergonomic frame design but are not without fault. If it isn’t and If you are lucky enough to have a BB30/PF30 I cannot recommend enough Praxis works BB30 adapter, Ive used it on x3 bikes now and everyone using them are finally free from the dreaded press fit creak. If using a BB71 however use loctite 641 between the shell and the bearing, this cured my creak and I’m still silent after around 3000 miles. Good luck!

It’s more than likely your BB
It’s more than likely your BB bearings are shot and will need a seasonal change. Easy to do yourself if you have the right tools.

Wouldn’t have expected the freehub to wear out after 2000 miles.

    There should be virtually no
There should be virtually no free movement in the crank, 2-3mm is very loose.

Slacken the left hand crank arm and tighten the centre plastic nut to remove free play, but not too much to cause drag.

Free hub could be worn, check for worn bearings, free play that shouldn’t be there.

Re creaking BB, common with pressfit designs, usual cure is to go for one of the more commonly made adaptors and have threaded bearings instead.
