I think they did, from memory back in the 70s/80s... haven't seen one for years though, our current milkman uses a standard van, albeit hybrid.

That's true enough. But doesn't address my point that the chainset you get as a replacement will not physically fit chainrings from the chain set...

EBay is full of lovely 80-90's steel frames.
I've got my Columbus SLX one for under £150 posted.
few years ago a custom frameset cost around 400 GBP

I believe you still can roughly. During the Prudential ride I met up with one builder and he does steel for £500 but the prices creeps up a lot higher when you go for more expensive steel tubing such as Columbus Spirit and it goes to £1,500.

It takes long drop brakes though, I think, which may not be what you are after.

I have the Equilibrium and it's brilliant. And bang on your budget. Not sure why£449.99 appears not to work for you when you have said under £450?
And not sure what's unclassic about it?.....
I bought a complete bike for £1000 with Tiagra groupset and not so great wheels, added mudguards and gatorskins and I love it. I would'nt hesitate buying the frame.
