I’m hoping that someone has some knowledge/expertise on warranties. My 6 month old Felt F6 had a catastrphic failure last week whilst doing 15MPH on a flat road. It looks like the chain snapped, snagged the FD (braze on) which broke in 2 places and was ripped clean from the frame. The carbon frame has some small cracks so I am essentially having to replace it. My LBS (where I purchased it) have contacted Felt to ask about crash replacement but I’m wondering about where I stand with warranty? The chain was not worn, has done 600 miles and has been ridden in the dry only. Any ideas welcome as I really don’t want to fork out for a new frame.

True. I wasn’t shifting but hard to prove. My LBS have been really helpful, as have Saddleback who distribute Felts and think it’s repairable. Considering it will require stripping, posting, repairing, rebuilding (with new 105 FD and chain), I think £195 is the best I could have hoped for. Warranty was always a long shot but I just wondered if anyone had any experience of it.

problem you may have, chains tend to snap when you screw a shift up, they tend not to just break( I am not saying it doesn’t happen, just unusual).

So…

The possible argument, you screwed a shift this caused the chain to snap, which then trashed everything else.

Just something for you to be aware of.

Even ‘consumables’ should
Even ‘consumables’ should have reasonable use and 600 miles doesnt really seem reasonable considering what the lifespan of a chain should be. I wouldn’t say it was fit for purpose when it’s been used so little. You’re right about the incidental damage but I want to understand every possibilty.

I may be mistaken but I think
I may be mistaken but I think chains may be covered by the term ‘consumable’ so may not be warrantied outside of any initial defects. And if it is covered, incidental damage almost certainly wouldn’t be.
