Historically the jester who
Historically the jester who would be the predecessor of today’s clowns and comedians played an important role in the king’s court. Only he would be allowed to ridicule those of a higher station without fear of punishment. The jester often was highly attuned to the goings on and would actually be a trusted advisor. The comedy being a screen to his intelligence. There are very few comedians these days with the skill to make you think whilst presenting that issue as a joke. Most tend to be crass and offensive.
