Salt replacement

    Because I sweat a lot I do have problems with salt deficit. I have tried all the hydration tabs like Nunn and powders but none seem to work. Any suggestions on something better ?

    I’m for the belts-and-braces
    I’m for the belts-and-braces approach of having a couple of electrolyte tabs in each bottle in warm weather. You’ll pee out the excess sodium pretty quickly and if you drink too much then you’ll be protected against ‘water-intoxication’.

    Thanks a lot Crikey. The second piece was very interesting as probably when really hot I do drink too much.

    I will need to plan out what to do because climbing in the alps when 25C at the bottom will be a test for me !

    Seeing salt on your top
    Seeing salt on your top doesn’t mean much.
    Do some reading around the idea that cramp isn’t caused by salt loss;

    I do drink enough on rides
    I do drink enough on rides and not affected me this year because not been hot enough. It is just where I will be in a couple of weeks will be very warm.

    Reading up in preparation for it and seems that the issues I have is not dehydration but salt loss (should see my tops when real hot) including nausea, sickness etc which is not associated with dehydration.

    Sweating doesn’t work like that.

    You sweat far more water than salt; therefore sweating increases the concentration of salt in your body.

    How do you know you have a salt deficit?

    2 tabs per bottle? I was
    2 tabs per bottle? I was getting cramps on 3-4hr rides & have upped the concentration a bit & been ok so far.
