So, how did he do it? How did Gmancervelo win the competition? What was his strategy? What did he do? Did he get a lot of breakaway points? Did he manage his transfers carefully? Did he plan it all out? Did he react rapidly to race conditions? We'll never know... But! You want to see how he used his transfers? That! I can help you with! Below is a screenshot showing how Gman, not to be confused with Gkam, brought his riders in... It's interesting to see that although he brought in Gilbert during the competition, he didn't have him in his roster when Gilbert got 50+ points... He also had Tiralongo at one point, but not when Tiralongo scored big... He never brought in Zakarin, Boem, and when he brought Intxausti in, it wasn't for the stages he netted huge points... He used only 41 transfers, and boy, did he spend them well! Anyways, enjoy!

And now for a little Post-Giro retrospective analysis...
Let's suppose that somehow you had known what the Top 9 had been in GC for the Giro. Maybe an angel visited you and whispered it in your ear! And, let's suppose, that. like the Fat Cyclist, you hated breakaways (http://road.cc/content/forum/63956-thefatcyclist-abandones). Then you might wonder, hmmm... if I had the right combination of riders, could I have won the competition just by switching between climbers and sprinters? Hmmm...
This had already been proven as possible in last year's Vuelta (http://road.cc/content/forum/130213-vuelta-stage-21), where we proved that swiching between the right set of riders, and only switching them to bring the sprinters in only for the sprint stages could (theoretically) nab you the top spot in a competition.
But was it possible in the Giro? Could we have essentially ignored Phil Gil's magnificent wins, the breakaway wins by Zakarin, Formolo, Intxausti, Boem and the others and still have won? Just by picking the right set of climbers and sprinters and having the discipline to only switch between them by bringing in the sprinters only for the clearly flat stages?... Hmmm...
For our example, these are the teams we shall use:
37.8 Alberto Contador
25.6 Fabio Aru
14.2 Mikel Landa
8.2 Andrey Amador
13.3 Ryder Hesjedal
14.9 Leopold Konig
6.9 Steven Kruijswijk
18.3 Damiano Caruso
5.6 Alexandre Geniez
18.9 Elia Viviani
22.5 Giacomo Nizzolo
20.2 Sacha Modolo
19.3 Luka Mezgec
17.1 Andre Greipel
9.4 Alexander Porsev
13.6 Davide Appollonio
Notes:
1. As clarified above, sprinters would only be brought in for the clearly flat stages. The sprint stages would be Stages 2, 6, 10, 13, 17 and 21.The rest of the time, you would bring in your climber (GC) team.
2. Viviani and Porsev would start in the Stage 1, the TTT, saving us transfers and providing us points because of their TTT performance.
3. Aru and Geniez would remain in the competiton from beginning to end, even on the flat stages, saving us transfers and providing us GC, YR, KOM and intermediate sprint points throughout the competition.
4. Greipel would obviously not be brought in after he left the competition.
5. This strategy would have used quite a few less than the 44 transfers we had allotted for the competition (38). (See screenshot below).
This strategy would have netted us 2991 points, a little more than enough to win the competition! Gmancervelo 'only' had 2825 points! I jest, of course! That's a lot of points!
Now, as many have pointed out, like my buddy STEVESPRO 79:
And it does take away from the spontaneity of the game, but it can (!) be done. But, of course, I, for one, would rather screw up my team royally with penalty transfers and have fun than play methodically and 'robotically'. But there it is! For your consideration!
By the way, thanks, nick, very nice of you!

As always enrique! Loving your work!
Well, the 1st Grand Tour of the season is done! And a fine one it was! As always, here's the 'Best' Possible Purist Team, for the Giro, admittedly done in a hurried fashion! I hope it's right!
37.8 Alberto Contador
25.6 Fabio Aru
20.5 Philippe Gilbert
18.9 Elia Viviani
14.2 Mikel Landa
13.3 Ryder Hesjedal
11.5 Giovanni Visconti
8.2 Andrey Amador
6.9 Steven Kruijswijk
156.9 credits
2603 points
This team would have been good enough to have come in at No. 41 in the Standard competition, wihtout having made a single transfer!
Congratulations to Gmancervelo, who seems to be up there all the time!, for the competition win, coming in at 2825 points!, and congrats to TER, who came in 3rd in today's stage! Good job, both of you! Very proud of your play!
As always, I have no access to the 'Best Actual' Team. So if anyone can post it, I'd love to see the difference between both teams.
Here's to a great Dauphine and a Great Tour de Suisse! And, of course, a Great Tour de France... where I hope we get 50 transfers...
Winner of the stage had Keisse! Lucky ...
3rd on the stage, cant complain
Just needed 3 points to catch chris for 3rd in fs, 55th overall in the end
All fs points are in the spreadsheet, just need to upload them onto here. Alls i will say is one person has a 50 odd point lead now...
I was right .....4 points
I think I've dropped to 6th in fs league thanks to hausslers puncture and not coming in last man
Was hoping for haussler to come in last but it was Hepburn
Cant see too many beating my score unless they plumped for any of the top 3, or Holfland instead of Modolo
45679 and 13 plus Landa and Aru.

Pity about all the punctures but Porsev coming 4th won't do me any harm! Mezgec got back as well so Haussler the main loser.
Great to see a breakaway win and I don't think many will have a podium badge today
Plenty of good stages and no great mess-ups by the organisers. Although tram lines are just about the worst thing for cyclists!
Had 6 transfers so had the seem team as you, but swap you having Hausser for me having Amador I think, so should just finish ahead of you on the stage
4,5,6,7,9,13,18 + Aru and Landa
just sums up this giro for myself
5,6,7,8,9,13
Now Haussler punctures.
Mezgec punctures 15k to go.
Probably won't be involved in sprint.
Four transfers left for me too. Went for
Viviani
Mezgec
Nizzolo
Modolo
To add to
Aru
Landa
Kruijswijk
Hesjedal
Amador
Had 4 transfers left. Chose:
SACHA MODOLO (LAM)
GIACOMO NIZZOLO (TFR)
LUKA MEZGEC (TGA)
DAVIDE APPOLLONIO (AND)
leaving these riders:
YURY TROFIMOV (KAT)
ALBERTO CONTADOR (TSB)
STEVEN KRUIJSWIJK (TLJ)
RYDER HESJEDAL (TCG)
MIKEL LANDA (AST)
Seems my purist is going a lot better than the standard, Arus 'comeback' lost me a top ten i think. Why did i have to pick Porte???
The annoyance of saving transfers and then getting called out to work and missing the transfer window....Not a sprinter in sight....Just about sums up my Giro....
Glad to see your still posting STEVESPRO 79.I have appreciated your contributions to the forum over the years.
Yeah, buddy, I agree with you... Saving transfers is a hassle...
.
I have to admit t's just not the same without you around here, Steve. I've missed you... Please don't ever leave again! Just kidding! You know you're my favorite person here, after Gkam, that is... :). And one of my favorite reasons to keep coming back! You'll bounce back, Steve! I'll bet you'll do a fantastic Dauphine and a great Tour de Suisse!
Made 6 transfers
Nizzolo
Viviani
Modolo
Haussler
Mezgec
Appollonio
Hofland
Kruijswijk
Aru
Plus Modolo
'Appollonio'
