I have a Bianchi Impulso with Campag Veloce with an Compact FSA Omega crank. After a good few miles the chain rings are very worn out. The ‘Mega’ Exo BB is also on its last legs (again) so I feel its probably time to replace it with something a bit more durable and a bit lighter.

I suppose I could use a Veloce crank but it has the awful Power Torque system. Any other suggestions would be very welcome – I don’t want to spend silly amounts as I may be replacing the bike sometime this year

Seems odd to me that you wouldn’t swap the worn out rings (because you do that anyway when they wear out, right ?) and get a better BB. Whats wrong with the cranks themselves that make them need replacement ?

Thanks for all your suggestions. After looking at the chainset more closely its falling apart and the bottom bracket appears to have gone yet again on one side – its a BB4000 Mega Exo and it really is rubbish. So I have gone and bought a Rotor 3d+. I figure I can always move it to a new frame (more so that I justify the cost!)

Spotted in another thread that FSA Omega chainsets may have a 19mm spindle or the BB30 standard – although I’ve only seen the BB30 version.

Have checked this and found it to be true. If your chainset is bb30, it’s good to go as regards replacing chainrings and bb. If not, it’s a new chain set

I would agree with that,
I would agree with that, Stronglight and TA make the best chainrings out there, and the shimano BB’s are good enough, and cheap enough to swap out.

I have no experience of Power torque, but ultra torque is a great system if you want to make it all Campag, my on bottom end is a free ball stronglight square taper with a Record chainset, lasts a lifetime, but needs a lot of servicing and it’s heavy.

Mega exo bottom brackets are utter gash and their chainrings seem to be made of edam.

There is however an alternative to a whole new chainset…

You could buy a new chainring and swap it over – I can vouch for Stronglight Zicral and they’re around 30 quid for a big ring.

A Shimano Ultegra Hollowtech bb will work in place of (and much better than) the mega exo and can be had for around 20 quid.

Tools to do the work add another tenner.

You can therefore greatly improve the current setup for sixty pounds. I did this on my hybrid commuter after the FSA chainring wore out with less than 900 miles and the mega exo bb after 500 miles. The new chainring still looks like new after 5000 miles.

power torque isn’t that bad really … yes the removal tool is expensive, but you could
always fire it in the lbs. mine’s lasted 2 winners so far and is still smooth 🙂
