Leith Hill Refreshments

Does anyone know any cyclist-friendly places on/around Leith Hill where one can refill water bottles, and maybe grab a lunch?

A pub or cafe would be good.

Thanks

Abinger Hatch used to be a great pub. Used to go there a lot but don't live in the area any more. There is the Wooton Hatch too which is OK though food is quite dear as I recall.

Thanks for all the options folks!

I'm planning to ride a version of Leith Hill Octopus, and was so looking for a mid-ride food and water refueling option.

Based on the options suggested, it seems like one of the pubs in Coldharbour or Abinger might work. The Leith Hill place, though preferred, was closed when I rode up past it last Sunday (just confirmed on their website as well), so can't rely on it.

  • Has anyone been to either of the pubs suggested in Coldharbour or Abinger?
  • Is there a cyclist-friendly cafe or pub in/near Dorking just off Coldharbour, or on A25 towards Wotton?

@arfa, @deblemund: I love Peaslake, and Shere too, but they're likelier to be visited on the ride back to Guildford, than mid-ride.

if you're in the area and doing the hills, Peaslake is very cycle friendly. The village shop is geared up for hungry cyclists (cake, coffee, sausage rolls etc). In addition there is the Hurtwood inn pub for drinks and food. Lots of mountain bikers and roadies congregate there so you won't get strange looks from the locals.
There is also the added benefit of a bike shop (pedal and spoke) in the village if you need a repair

On the way down to the A-road from Leith, you can branch off left into Abinger Hammer and there's a lovely looking pub on your right called the Abinger Hatch. From there, you can continue down, nip across the A-road and go up Whitedown (or not!). Or there is a village store, a pub and (I think) a cafe in Peaslake where people often stop. Also: William Bray pub in Shere, Box Hill cafe (where they are used to filling bottles and do so happily), Pilgrim Cycles at Boxhill & Westhumble station.

Close to the top is the village of Coldharbour with a pub and a nice garden out the back (think this is what Joemmo is referring to). Called the Plough Inn I think. Also riding up from ockley there may be a cafe at Leith Hill place when it is open.

Hi - not quite, what I meant was this place:

the tower at the top of the hill. It's been 13 years since I lived down there but I presume it's still standing.. used to stop there for a refill and flapjack while MTBing round the Downs. But yes, Coldharbour is probably a better bet on a road bike.

I'm pretty sure there's a tiny village (few houses/church/pub) a couple of miles further on than Leith Hill, in between Leith and White Down Lane.

IIRC you just follow the road straight and then take the left when it forks. I'm fairly sure there's a nice-looking pub there, never stopped though.

That's the Abinger Hatch. Looks lovely!

There used to be a food stall actually in the tower on the top of Leith hill but it's only accessible via a walk or the track from the road IIRC.
