Hour Record: age group records

This being the year of the Hour Record, I was intrigued by the attempts of Jens Voight and Robert Marchand. Although Voight set a World Record he knew that it was likely that younger riders would quickly attempt and break his record. However it stuck me that he would still be an ‘age group’ record for over 40s and as such he is still a record holder just like the over 100 year old Robert Marchand. So is there a chance that us mere mortal could live long enough and stay fit enough to take a record of sorts? To set a world best for your age group all you have to do is break the curve and be a little faster or a bit older.

I would be fascinated to find out if anyone knows of other age group one-hour track records and do they conform to some sort of performance curve? Waiting 40 years might be the only way I ever set a record for anything.

    That’s a very steady trend
That’s a very steady trend line actually. Both encouraging and discouraging I guess. The inevitability of age and deterioration vs still being able to ride happily into your grave.

    Wow, that is a perfect
Wow, that is a perfect response. I have plotted the data below. There seems to be a very linear relationship for the over 40s but there is a gaping hole for the over 75s before Marchand. Looks like I was right, I just need to wait 40 years to set a world record. No cutsies, it was my idea first!
