It was really good stuff from Swift – there were a couple of attacks, and Movistar were driving a pretty hard pace from quite a long way out (40-50km). Lots of decent climbers didn’t manage to hang in there, but Swift did. So no unusual explanation, we just have to assume that he’s got really good legs at the moment (3rd in San Remo remember) and is maybe better uphill than a lot of us thought. I could imagine him hanging in there in a larger group, but to be one of a group of just 20 surprised me too. Excellent to see.

Sorry mate, my fault, i scored 145 but i had a 10 point penalty so ended up with 135 and came 222nd on the stage. I had worked my score out myself without looking at the results and forgot i had the 10 pointer.

I’ve had an extra portion of humble pie 🙁

From what I saw, the attacks
From what I saw, the attacks were not enough to shake some guys, Swift went out the back and used his descending skills to get back into the group. From there is was simple, he was the only sprinter there.

    There were a couple.

He isn’t that good a climber that he can live in that company if they were properly attacking hence the second question about attacks ….

Swift looks like a great bet
Swift looks like a great bet to challenge for wins on intermediate stages in Grand Tours (the Sagan style stages) if he can win days like today. Awesome stuff.

    1 – Swift
    2 – Valverde
    3 –

    1 – Swift
    2 – Valverde
    3 – Kwiatowski
    4 – Slager
    5 – Cunego
    6 – Gautier
    7 – Hivert
    8 – Peraud
    9 – Contador
    10 – Evans
    11 – Jeannesson
    12 – Pinot
    13 – Monfort
    14 – Trofimov
    15 – Van Garderen
    16 – Yates (S)
    17 – Poels
    18 – Spilak
    19 – Sanchez (S)
    20 – Kiserlovski

So that’s 2,3,5,8,9 for me (and pretty much everyone else).

Congrat to anyone who actually picked Swift for today, very impressive to win from riders like Valverde. Swift could well turn into a great rider if Sky give him the chance.
