Bristol and Bath Railway Path – gritted?

    Does anyone know if the Bristol and Bath Railway Path has been gritted and is safe to ride? I normally commute from the centre of Bath to Bristol along it, but with the freezing weather and the little bit of snow we’ve had if its not been gritted I don’t fancy taking the risk

    Apparently Bristol consider

    Apparently Bristol consider the Railway Path an important route, so do do some work to keep it clear of ice. BANES don’t list it as a route that they clear, so obviously don’t consider it an important travel route.

    Given the vast difference in the number of people who use the path (both on foot and by bike) at the Bristol end compared to the Bath end, I’m not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised

    Aren’t they all unitary

    Aren’t they all unitary authorities – so responsible for their own roads (trunk roads and motorways apart)?

    It does make you wonder who eactly is responsible for gritting it. The bit within Bristol City Council’s area is fine, going by paulrattew’s post yesterday, but sections within South Gloucestershire and Bath & North East Somerset much less so.

    The relevant highways authorities for the latter would therefore be Gloucestershire CC and Somerset CC. But officially, the Bristol & Bath Railway Path is maintained by Sustrans. I may drop them a line and find out the SP.

    Let me know if you find anything good in that tyre size. I had to put 650b x 38 mm studded on my gravel bike last year because there wasn’t anything closer that would fit (I can’t clear a 27.5 x 2.2 inch.)

    I decided to risk it this morning. Took the gravel bike with 650b 48mm tyres. From Bath to just after Warmley it was sketchy – quite a bit of ice, but manageable riding carefully with the big tyres. From Mangotsfield into the centre it was fine – looks like that has all been gritted as there was no ice at all. 

    I’ll see what the conditions are like on my ride back to Bath this evening, but given the state of the first half of the path this morning, I don’t think I’ll commute in tomorrow.     No, unless that policy has

    No, unless that policy has changed.  I’ve commuted on it for 13 years and had a few wipe-outs on icy patches (got away with no more than road rash).  The mornings are usually the risky times so I often train in, bike home if temperatures are sub-5 deg.  Right now it’s too cold all day.  I’ve sometimes switched to my MTB (v slow) and have some Conti 700×37 Top Contact Winter II tyres on my commuter.  That said, some people barrel up and down there happy to take the risk.  My view is that not cycling, and I do enjoy my commute, is better than weeks off with a serious injury.
