GoPro charging problem

    My GoPro Hero 7 White has suddenly stopped charging: when plugged in it comes on fine and the battery icon registers as charging, but it remains resolutely on 0% and turns off as soon as the charging lead is unplugged. I’ve tried a factory reset but it’s made no difference. I bought it brand new in December 2020 so I was hoping for a bit more battery longevity than this! If anyone has any suggestions to fix I’d be most grateful, thanks.

    Thanks, yes as below I have connected it to a powerbank – oddly it completely charged itself from the powerbank and then worked fine independently, so wondering if it was just a temporary fault. Good idea though, keeping powerbank on standby in case it happens again.

    I had a Fly6 battery fail

    I had a Fly6 battery fail after a year of hard use. I took it apart and put a samsung 18650 in. That was 4 years ago and it’s still giving me a good 5 hours (although not been used as heavily as that first year).

    It’s possible it’s just wear and tear, but also possible there was a bad batch of batteries. I found this support thread and they seem quite keen to get the customer to call support with the camera serial number.

    I’d get in touch with them, it could be a known problem and worth a shot, as they might replace it with a refurbished unit. A polite moan about the disappointing longevity of the product should at least produce a discount code for a new purchase!

    Yeah, I knew the battery was non-changeable and only has a 150 minute lifespan but that was fine for the commute, I was just hoping for more than a year’s use!

    Wow! This makes the Hero 7 Black look good- you just take the battery out and the other one in in 5 seconds. And you still have to suffer the dire GoPro Quick PC software as well!

    Thanks for the reply, appreciate it – it pretty much has been used to depletion a minimum five days a week, and before dawn throughout the winter so pretty cold, so I suppose it must be at its limit. Battery replacement looks way beyond my skills and/or patience. Time for a new toy soon I think…for now I’ve realised I can run it directly off a small powerbank I had spare that sits nicely in my frame bag.

    You could expect 300 charge cycles from it, but using in cold weather (or charging when cold), or regularly using until the battery is totally depleted can reduce this. If you’re charging every day, then failure just after a year could be expected.

    I’d contact GoPro support. They might replace it if the battery has prematurely failed, even if just out of warranty. There might be a diagnostic mode where it can tell them how many charge cycles and min/max temperature extremes etc. to confirm this.
