54cm or 56cm 2022 Madone for 175cm bloke

    Hello all,

    Hope everyone on here is keeping well. This is probably an age old question which ultimately comes back to “get a bike fit”, but I’m trying to get advice on whether all 5’9″ (175cm) of me with 83cm (32.5in) inseam would be fine on a 54cm or 56cm 2022 Trek Madone. They have none for me to try as all have been sold and won’t be in until March at the earliest. They do have a 54 and 56cm on order though, I put a deposit on a 54, they said I can have the 56 if I want.
    Typically Trek recommend a 56cm, but a few Trek dealers and bike shops have said id defo be a 54cm so I’m a bit confused. I don’t have alien arms, and will probably change the stem to an aero one afterwards so can swap the 90cm stock one to a 100/110cm one. The 56cm comes with a 100cm set, stock so maaaaybe it’s a tad long but I’m bot sure. As I say, they have none to try so I can’t jump on one sadly.
    I currently ride a 54cm 2017 Trek Emonda with a 100mm stem which is fine, my Checkpoint is a 56cm which is also fine but they’re different geometries so probably a irrelevant.

    Anyway, you input would be welcome and needed.

    Yep, after some research and advice from folk it looks like a 54cm should be just fine. only problem is i dont think i’ll be receiving it in March like they suggested. It’s bound to be delayed… oh well, patience is a virtue! I’d be happy with summer…..

    I bought the 2020 Madone,
    I bought the 2020 Madone, delivered Jan 2021, so the same frame. I’m 175cm (5’9″) and 54cm fits me perfectly, albeit I have short legs (30cm inseam). I tried the 56cm Sept 2020 but it didn’t feel right so waited and glad I did. It’s just right and my SL7 is awesome, and a really beautiful piece of engineering. You won’t regret it. And it’s fast!

    54cm, I’m similar size and my
    54cm, I’m similar size and my 54cm is the most comfortable bike in the stable, it could’ve been made to measure!

    Yeah, looking at geometrygeeks.bike, the reach on the Madone is 5mm longer than the Emonda, and the stack is 14mm lower which seems fitting for an aero bike. But judging by whats out there it seems I don’t think I’ll be in a situation where the 54cm feels too small.

    A quick look at the geometry
    A quick look at the geometry charts suggest the top tube for both 54cm Emonda and Madone are the same and general geometry similar if not identical. The size guide I’ve seen online suggests 54cm goes up to 5ft9, the 56cm accommodates anyone from 5 ft8 to 5ft11.

    So either looks fine – if you know and like the 54cm Emonda, I’d stick with a 54cm Madone

    Thanks for the comments gents, looks like a 54 should suffice. i suppose I’ve been a bit paranoid due to my Emonda, the 54cm frames have a shorter seat cap and I’m running it at the limit, which shouldnt be the case with the Madone.

    On an interesting note, was doing a bit of research on Trek Segafredo riders and their frame sizes. I know they’re pro racers and prefer aggressive setups but Ryan Mullen is 6’2″ (188cm) and rides a 56cm Emonda…. wowsers

    90mm sounds quite short for a
    90mm stem sounds quite short for a 54cm bike, but apart from that wouldn’t hesitate to get the 54 I’d I were you – you can always swap the stem out cheaply. You don’t need a bike fit, might as well burn 150 quid lol.

    I’ll say take the 54. Yes, you could no doubt ride the 56 but there are enough possiblities to make a 54 “bigger” – longer stem, turn the stem over, don’t cut the steerer tube too short to start with, seat post with or without offset. I’m sure some will give you a case for the 56 so I don’t think anything can go horribly wrong with either.

    I used that site when considering my new bike options and it’s very helpful.  My other comment – as a general rule – would be if in doubt go for the smaller bike.

    it’ll probably tell you the madone is longer and has a bigger drop to the  handlebars but it might not be that much (I’ve not checked). I found it useful when comparing bikes earlier on this year when I went from a standard road bike to a more aero/aggressive model
