    Rager – these people went out and died for us it’s disgusting that you have to go and sell poppies people should give the money anyway

    Anyway, about cars, and something I’ve not heard much raging about – the TLDR here is “how the car stole your Remembrance Day Parade.”  The link is to guidance from the Royal British Legion to its branches:

    I don’t know if this 2018 incident, in Studley, is what sparked it:

    Army veteran and former Coventry cop fighting for life after being hit by car on remembrance parade

    Several local newspapers covered the story.  It sounds like there was an insurance claim. 

    The guidance bans RBL branches from doing any traffic management of their own – everything must be left to the council and police.  The guidance states that a parade is not the actual act of remembrance – but that many places traditionally have had a parade.  

    The police can’t be everywhere on Remembrance Day, especially not nowadays.  I guess it will also depend on the siting of the war memorial, being the likely start or end-point of a parade, e.g. some are set in a park, but many are not.  In my little village, I confess to never having attended,  they march from the war memorial to the church – about half a mile along the Main Street.

    I’m glad you include white poppies.

    I knew you would support them because the premise is so right, it’s easy to stand behind it.

    Presumably on your spectrum of poppy colour inclusiveness, purple is also in the “Acceptable to Nigel” range.

    Norwich seems to have done a

    Norwich seems to have done a slimmed-down ceremony on Sunday due, they say to Covid which at least some  weren’t happy with.

    Things  seemed to be going ahead near me along normal lines this year. Anyone found any reports that differ?

    The 11am fixture of Remembrance Sundays coincides with the end of our club ride. Many of us join the crowd that now fills the main road (and seems to get bigger every year) at the war memorial to pay our respects. Whilst a bunch of usually bedraggled and cold cyclists might seem out of place I think of the mostly young men who we are remembering, many of whom would at least have used a bicycle to get around and who gave up everything for the freedoms of their families and now us as their future generations.

    TBH I’ve can’t ever remember

    TBH I’ve can’t ever remember a rememberance day parade. Some local clubs cycle to Meriden to salute the memorial to the unknown cyclist. But maybe it is more a village thing. The one your second link sent was for the 100 year anniversary of the end of WW1 so maybe it was more of a special reason for having one. Or maybe it is just the smaller villages and Army towns that have the parade.

    Ooh – there’s a confrontation for the papers – Our Heroes vs. people with Places To Go. (Cynical me would like it to be a mum taking kids to some voluntary activity for bonus points. Glorious past vs. innocent future – who’ll win?)

    Sadly it’s just another statistic from the War on the Non-motorist. (Points for PWEI ref though!).
