    Hi all,
    I currently own a Cannondale Synapse 105 Women’s bike, and have been using it on my Tacx smart trainer during lockdown. I am however, starting to get outside more, and have found changing the wheel to/from the turbo tyre a bit of a pain.

    I was wondering if anyone could recommend a rear wheel that I could purchase, so that I could have two wheels and simply replace the entire wheel rather than the tyre etc. Am a bit of a mechanical novice, so something fairly straightforward would be preferable!

    The current wheel is a Maddux RD 2.0.

    Be realistic about how much
    Be realistic about how much turbo you think you will be doing. I just turbo when the weather is really rubbish or I am recovering from injury, so I just stick a bike on the turbo as it is. Most normal road tyres can take a bit of turbo use without falling apart, and any slick that accumulates soon disappears after a couple of miles on the road.

    Pretty sure that the Maddux

    Pretty sure that the Maddux RD is a disc wheel so you’ll need a brake rotor and also need to fit a cassette. 

    You’ll also need to check what axle type your existing wheel uses – standard QR or thru-axle.

    The whole swapping process is quick and easy once you’ve fitted the cassette. Make sure you get exactly the same cassette as you’ve got on your current wheel, that way there won’t be any issues with alignment and shift performance. 

    If you want to keep costs low I’d look for a secondhand disc wheel on eBay and buy a new cassette and the tools to fit it (chainwhip and lock ring tool). All in you’re probably looking at £100 to complete the job – parts and tools.

    If you’re not too bothered about getting an “upgraded” wheel, and just want something like for like, then something like this would probably be OK for you:

    But just a couple of things to bear in mind:

    I’m not sure if your bike is rim brake or disc brake- you’ll need the right kind of wheel.

    You’ll also need another cassette for the wheel too, and you’ll need to fit this or arrange to have it fitted. It’s a reasonably straightforward job but does require a specialist cassette tool. Factor in around £40-£50 for this.

    If your bike is disc brake, you will also need to buy a disc rotor for the wheel (or you could just remove it from your turbo trainer wheel). You’ll also need to make sure the axle standard is the same as your current wheel / bike- you’ll notice the wheel above says “142mm x 12mm”, also known as “thru axle”. It’ll be either this or “135mm x 9mm”, which is also referred to as quick release. If you take your wheel off by opening a lever and the wheel drops out, it’s quick release. If you take it off by unscrewing a long axle and removing it before dropping the wheel out, it’s 142×12.

    Also, the link above is literally the first / cheapest option I found when I randomly picked a website I buy from and trust, and that I know is a decent wheel. There are a LOT of options out there depending on your budget.
