mtb qr skewer / stunt pegs compatability

    havent ridden a bike for 30 years and in that time got fat so just bought myself a 2nd hand carrera mtb intending to add stunt pegs to rear axel and make a frame to rest it on so creating homemade exercise bike. issues – bike comes with 5mm diameter qr skewer and stunt pegs start at 9mm. the axel tube for the skewer is possibly 6mm diameter so i cant just buy a 9mm skewer as it wont fit. any thoughts welcome. dont want to spend more than £20 -£30

    No, the trainer comes with a skewer we have established will fit the OP’s bike.

    You’d need to replace the QR skewer with an old schoolnut/ bolt.

     this was never going to be

     this was never going to be simple. the skewer on my bike is 5mm diameter and the axle tube it goes thro is probably only 5.5mm  diameter. length of skewer is not an issue at this point. will the domed ends of the trainer skewer go into a 5.5mm diameter tube?

    Usually the trainer comes with a skewer that has domed ends on. I’ve used one on everything from a kids mountain bike to an adult road bike, so the axle length is not a problem. There is a mating clamp on the trainer that docks onto them, so the axle is held at each end. The trainer should come with some device to allow it to fit different wheel sizes. 

    You will want to get a turbo tyre. A standard MTB tyre will make an entertaining noise and spray rubber up the wall.

    Check the skewer thickness precisely. I got a ‘bargain ‘ wheelset once that only takes a really thin skewer.  

     

    Plenty on ebay- get a second hand one and you can look up the manufacturer’s spec on their website.

    how do these kinds of things attach to the rear axle? do you take out the QR skewer then attach the trainer to the axle? my QR skewer is 5mm diameter but there are other sizes on other bikes so i’m assuming a trainer will have a particular attachment size that may or may not fit my bike

    DC Cycles does a pretty

    DC Cycles does a pretty decent Warm Up Stand. We got one which we take to BMX race events, to warm up before races. My son uses it to balance his GT BMX racer on, though I’ve also put my own GT BMX racer ont it as well. It has quite a range of adjustability. It’s nice and stable in use and quite well made.

    You might want to contact DC and see if it’ll fit your MTB, or if they have something similar that will.

    never occurred to me i cd get

    never occurred to me i cd get one 2nd hand. have seen one on ebay but there are no specs available. is it likely to fit any bike?

    Probably better off getting a

    Probably better off getting a turbo trainer – you should be able to pick one up 2nd hand that would be in your price range.  This will give variable resistance, and will likely me more stable.
