Garmin Downloaded Maps – BEWARE!

    Anybody aware that if you buy OS maps from Garmin for a Garmin device it has a 12 month time limit for repeat downloads, meaning that if your device becomes corrupt and you need to reinstall the map, which is only by Garmin Express, you will NOT be able to after a 12 month period, or, if that map ceases to be supported by Garmin.

    I have just discovered to my cost that two maps I purchased, one two years ago, and the other 14 months ago, to the value of circa £250 are no longer available to me, and Garmin will not provide the new (later) maps without paying the full cost, even though I offered a part payment.

    So I essential have a very expensive Garmin 1000 now without the maps I want and need making the device of no use to me.

    Anyone else aware or experienced this, or did I have an agent who didn’t know what he was talking about and I need to go higher in Garmin?

    I use openstreetmaps on my Garmin, works like a charm.  Can only compare with the official Garmin maps for the Netherlands/Belgium so ymmv but although the look is different, OSM is just as good.  I prefer donating to the project to getting sucked into the overpriced Garmin map deal.

    *Have to add that I once had an issue with a Garmin navigator (hardware  failure) exactly 2 months after the warranty lapsed and they were brilliant, sent me a brand new unit for free.

    Thanks all for responses!  I guess I should read T&Cs for every website I go to 🙁   Interesting, I use and have used Adobe products for >15 years and I can still download the original software I ordered!

    I think the policy of Garmin is unacceptable and for that it is time to look at other devices….

    Have you considered using
    Have you considered using OpenStreetMap? It’s a little more faffing to get it working but I’ve been using them for about 7-8 years and it works at least as well as the Garmin maps in my experience. And you can’t beat the price (it’s free).

    This is made clear on the website. You can also only use them on one device. For that reason I buy them on SD cards rather than download them. On an SD card they don’t expire, and you can switch between devices.
