Groupset query

    Hi all my first post.

    I am currently building my very first bike. Been cycling for a while my first bike was a specialized allez budget bike then i jumped onto a cube agree race when i got into it a little more im now 7 years into road biking and wanting to take it to the next level with the bike. This is how im getting on at the moment been in the making for around 6-7 months not easy building the dream whilst paying the bills and supporting the family but hey ho ill get there in the end.

    Frame – sworks tarmac 2016 chameleon blue/purple
    Wheels – Campagnolo bora ultra 50mm
    Handlebars – 3t aeronova carbon
    Stem – Zipp sl carbon

    Obviousley my next major thing is the groupset which i am looking at options of

    Campy super record 2017 mechanical 11speed
    Campy super record 2018 mechanical 12speed
    Campy record 2018 mechanical 12 speed
    (Im going campy as the freehub is campy)

    Now my big question is that ive always wanted an oval rotor q rings setup, is it possible to do this with a campy set up as this is my first venture into campy and if so what combimation of gearing should i go for. Do i need to change the bb for the rotor crank or not? Whats everyones thoughts?

    Record 12 speed BCD is 112/145 mm for compact, semi, and standard, so I don’t think the stuff made for Shimano will fit. Looking (very quickly) around online, I can’t seem to find much in the way of oval rings for Campag, though I’m sure they must exist.

    The other alternative if you’re not buying the groupset as a groupset is to do away with the chainset all together and just get a Rotor or other suitable chainset. While I’m a fan of Campag (Potenza disc on the winter bike and Chorus disc on the summer), that sentiment doesn’t extend to ultra-torque. Hirth joints are a great solution for the right problem, but the fact that bottom bracket standards are so ridiculously proliferated makes a Hirth joint a poor fit for a chainset. Some people install them and never have to worry about them again, but I spent months trying to sort out the clicky creaking on one of the bikes before the ultra-torque bolt sheared on a reinstall and I’d decided I’d had enough and went third party.

    Can’t advise on Campagnolo

    Can’t advise on Campagnolo specifically, but Ultegra R8000 performs fine with Rotor oval chainrings, so I think there’s a good chance you’ll be OK.

     

    From the research I did into Rotor prior to purchasing, it seems they now only make rings for their own direct mount design, or 4 bolt 110mm BCD, as used by Shimano.  I can’t find the BCD used by Campagnolo on their site so can’t advise if they are compatible. Rotor used to make rings for differend BCDs and in 4 or 5 bolts, and you can find them online still, but it seems they are now discontinued, at least from their current website.
