Mavic Open Pro UST shocker

    I’ve been using Mavic Open Pros for years and couldn’t wait to get my hands on the new Open Pro USTs.

    Well, I finally got my hands on them today and the rim JUST FOLDED under the pressure of a tyre lever when fitting a used tyre that came off my old Open Pros. It’s bent, cracked and way beyond repair. 

    I’m in shock: anyone had similar issues?

    The old Open Pros are a good

    The old Open Pros are a good choice.  I too have some 36h built professionally.  Great wheels – survived 2 Paris-Roubaix and a couple of winters.  But come to think of it, my last rear wheel split too – though that was fair wear and tear…

    I recently bought a pair of 36h Open Pro Classic silver to reÃ¥place a pair of Campagnolo Seoul 88 rims on my  vintage bike from Bike24

    I have been running an rebuilding a pair of 32spoked Mavic Open Pro  Ceramic from 2007 for the past 12y – this rim does not have a machined sidewall. They are super easy to build and regadless if you i use low, mid or high tension.

     

    Big suprise when the new Open Pro’s  basicly buckled at low tension when i felt the tensiion bwteen spokes just using my hands. There is clearly a major production issue at mavic. From inside the rim i could se a visible gab arround the weld seeam but even that should not end up in a rim that  is soft a melted butter and unable to spring back in shape.

     

    After discussing for weeks with Bik24 (wiggle/chainreaction) i decided i dodnt want to risk getting a replacemnet rim from tha same approx production batch and got a refund and bought a pait from a different supplier – they did not show any visbile signs of defects but still they where near imposible to build as thay where just as sioft (though they did not buckele).

    Im 100% that even though mavic still claims the open pro classic rims are made out of ‘Maxtal’ alloy, i’d say its a total different material. abnd by far an inferior material.

    Something similar happened to

    Something similar happened to me last year with Pacenti rim – it was worn out past the marker and I was about to replace it, and whilst putting the tyre on – the brake wall got bent. That was a signal – change the rim. Again, different circumstances as the rim was heavily worn.

    Unfortunately I didn’t even get the tyre on.  It was the tyre lever that bent the rim….. I used to run 80-90 on my HED Belgiums which are a similar rim and probably wouldn’t go much beyond that.

    Chris, out of curiousity. What tyre and pressure did you go for? In theory, they have 87 PSI limit but I inflate them 90-80 (rear back) for clincher tubed tyre, like I said never had issues.

    First time I around, I tested the rim with 100 PSI – again no issues.

    Probably a one-off bad rim.

    I was going to use Germany 1

    I was going to use Germany 1 – France 0 on account of the tyres being Continentals….probably wasted in finance 🙂

    Thanks for the reply, Ogi.  They were put together by a wheel-builder with triple-cross lacing – so if anything it’s probaby a Mavic build-quality issue.  I’m pleased that yours are fine: they sound a nice, light build: which is what I wanted 🙂

    It was quite literally the rim that folded in where I tried to put the wheel on.   I’ll get a new rim and try again….as they’re not too expensive.  And I’ll try a different tyre – thought the one I used came off the old wheels by hand so wasn’t.  Incidentally, what tyres do you use?

    I am using the rims with CX

    I am using the rims with CX-Rays and Hope Mono RS hubs for almost 7,000km so far since beginning of the summer. I had no issues with the rims, touch wood. I am generally very happy with mine (braking, stiffness, smoothness, comfort).

    Your case sounds really odd. Could it be the lacing of the wheel or something else done wrong? Did you do the wheel or was it an experienced wheelbuilder?

    I haven’t heard such a case before.
