They’re well out of warranty, but I wondered if anyone else has seen this failure mode on a pair of Campag Zondas? A crack in the rim by a spoke hole. No damage to the outer part of the rim. Just thought it was a bit strange.

    I’d also still recommend

I’d also still recommend Zondas, but for a commuter, couldn’t justify the extra £200 vs the Calimas.  Bit of a shame to chuck the entire wheelset away, as the hubs are fantastic and have only just had new bearings fitted.  I did consider a pair of handbuilts, but I need the new wheels ASAP and they’d be 2 or 3 times the cost.

    The owner of the failed

The owner of the failed Shamals was around 18st, was very powerful and did a lot of miles in the Alps etc, so there was no real shock when the cracks were found. He swapped them out for a set of Zondas as they were cheap compared, and to the best of my knowledge they are still rolling on.

I never had any issues recommending Zondas to anyone, I thought it to be one of the best factory wheels at its pricepoint.

They have over 30,000 km on

They have over 30,000 km on them, so I’ve had my 280 quid’s worth and, to be honest, the brake tracks are rather worn.

I think the Zonda and Shamal have the same rim, with the difference being in the spokes and hub.  I weigh between 82 and 88 kg depending on time of year, so I’m nowhere near the weight limit.

I’ve ordered a set of the new Calimas to replace these.  Only a hundred quid on CR at the moment. Bit heavier than the Zondas but not enough to notice on a commuter.

I had a customer who had

I had a customer who had similar issues, but his had several cracks, radiating from several spoke holes. This was on a pair of Shamal Ultras rather than Zondas though. He was a big chap who rode a lot of miles it has to be said.

Hmm thats a shame.  How many miles have you done on them?  Got 5000 miles on mine and they are good as new.
