Local routing.. Midlands to South Coast via Bath

    Hiya, 

    Planning a long day in the saddle in a couple of weeks starting in Leaminton and ending in Milford on Sea via Bath, for giggles as I’ve never been there and I thought it’d be a nice lunch stop.

    Anyway, spotting Daves call to arms on local route know how.. I thought I’d ask the same question, can anyone offer any tips or re-routes along my way..  https://cycle.travel/by/peted76/leam_to_new_milton

    I’m quite sure some of this will be taking me on the NCN routes so I’ll happily take on board any nice places to stop, eat get coffee or any roads to avoid…

    If you don’t mind adding a couple of miles you can avoid two sharpish hills between Woodgreen and Godshill by going via Braemore and Fordingbridge – if you do that your significant climbing is done by Downton

    This place is just off your route before Bradford on Avon, but actually if you stopped there you could drop down through Winsley in to BoA which is a much nicer route quieter route and has a nice long, straight downhill on it. Other thing about it is that is that last time I went it was displaying a Teamroad.cc sticker in the window – I used to go in there quite a lot but never remembered my Team card – so haven’t actually tested that, I’m guessing given the wide geographical spread of Team road.cc members they don’t get many people going in there for a discount. Anyway the food is good, especially the cakes, so are the drinks and for round here it’s pretty reasonable – you’ll also be totally safe leaving your bike outside.

    Looks good for my neck of the woods (Salisbury to Milford)

    The road from Salisbury to Downton is nicely lumpy and very picturesque but is used as a rat run in rush hour so make sure you time it right. Quite narrow in places and road edges are very poor so stay central where possible. However it’s the only safe route from Salisbury south, unless you don’t mind a bit of chalk-laning on the old drovers road from Nunton (south of Odstock) to Whitsbury.

    Once you’re past Godshill and the amusingly named Fighting Cocks pub it’s downhill/flat pretty much all the way to the coast. If you fancy a very short 25% challenge hook a left at the top of Stuckton Hill onto Blissford Road and then take Blissford Hill. 25% for about 200 metres!

    As you head through North Gorley there’s an excellent farm shop & cafe (Hockey’s) that’s very popular with cyclists, well worth a stop for fuel.
