    Bought myself a couple of new cycling Jerseys today and decided they’re a bit…well…pffft…kak…

    Decided to up the ante and went on ebay and purchased myself a fantastic 1992 Banesto jersey for a tenner instead. 

    Which then led me to do a bit of browsing. I find it a bit hard to believe that so many genuine retro cycling jerseys are available for so little…are they really so uncool ?…All i can see is a market waiting to be born.

    Why so little interest ?

    The only “expensive” jersey I now own is a jersey I got 2 years ago when I went to visit my old bike shop that is 2,500 miles from where I live and I raced out of 35 years ago, and they had a modern team jersey with their logo on it so I bought it and paid $80 which they gave me a discount from $120.  But that was a bit of nostalgia for me so I had to buy one since I was in town.

    I have the opposite. I live on the W Lancs plain in Lancashire. Lots of rain off the Irish sea, wind and really exposed and wide open. As a returning cyclist after twenty years… i used to wear a Hellly Hansen undergarment under a slightly looser fitting (retro) jersey of the time. I’m failing to see any clothing that is going to beat that regardless of cost right now…

    I’m quite shocked at what the manufacturers are trying to sell now at such premium prices for stuff that could only ever be of very marginal difference.

    @Behindthebikesheds. I read somewhere recently that cycling is like a Fauvist painting….well it was even more fauvist back in the day. I love the fact that “visibility” gives you the excuse to dress like a Andre Derain painting on wheeels….and yes…it does border on the ugly at times..

    Not my Banesto shirt though…that’s a thing of beauty…

    I used to have a pink/green

    I used to have a pink/green/blue swirling colours campagnolo jersey, back when I was a skinny 85kg pup, to be honest I look back at the vast majority from the late 80s/90s and think they are just too much/ugly.

    I’ve never been into team kit and never ever bought any, I like colours so have reds and blues plus I had some special jerseys made in my rugby teams colours last year in black and white irregular hoops đŸ˜€

    Are the newer jerseys any better? I’d say yes but tbh I never had any issues BITD of the polyester jersey even when I was cycling in 104F peak temps in France in 1990 and 10 days continuous all above 85F.

    ATEOTD take advantage of trends, this works for all sorts of kit in many walks of life from kitchens to clothing, carpets, bedding, wallpaper, even cars, the list is endless.

    Retro stuff works just as

    Retro stuff works just as good as modern stuff regardless of all the mumbo jumbo scientific blah blah they can say about the new stuff.   I don’t even buy expensive jerseys, I never pay more then $20 for a jersey.  I had the harshest testing environment for clothing most people will never have, I use to live in the Mojave Desert of California where I rode in heat over 100 degrees quite often, and the best jersey I had cost $139 with all the scientific mumbo jumbo promises of being cooler…it felt hotter then a $12 jersey I had!!  So on hot days I wore the $12 one after many days of comparisons in hot weather, it also dried faster then the expensive one, and even crazier…I still have that jersey, the expensive one wore out?  In that crazy environment I also found that loose fitting jerseys were cooler then tight fitting ones but people complain of aero dynamics issues with loose jersey…well when it’s 90 degrees plus outside aerodynamics is the last thing I care about!

    So I aways recommend people to save their money on jerseys and socks and instead take the difference and add it onto shorts because comfortable shorts will allow you to pedal longer, so get really nice shorts.  Just look for 100% polyester, cheap 100% polyester performs just as well as expensive 100% polyester because both are 100% polyester!  

    I think too that a lot of people will see those retro jerseys you bought and think their modern and wonder where you got it!  The selection is fantastic on EBay.
