Colnago Precisa replacement

    Hi guys,

    I had a nasty crash with Master Olympic and the fork has suffered a bit. It remains to be seen if it can be salvaged (in original non-chromed paint).

    I’m thinking about replacements, and whilst I can find the new non-threaded Precisa – that would cause me some serious faff with moving away/converting my current setup/headset…I’m also thinking about custom built options.

    Saffron guys are quite open to Reynolds/Columbus options: 953,921,Spirit, Zona etc. They will be able to get the rake and length appropriate and of course it will be threaded.

    Would 953 be too stiff compared to Precisa? Should I go for some less tiff options (725/631 or Zona)? The fork and the frame date from 1995/1996 era. I think the tubing is Gilco, but not sure about the fork – although I’m pretty sure it’s Columbus tubing.

    Any opinions?

    On a different note, the fork is awesome. Geometry, rake, steering wise – I really can’t distinguish the difference. It looks good too – other than badging, which I personally don’t care. Many thanks Jack! Saved me some money of going custom, which in some absolute level would also be nice, but in relative definitely not (£150 for Condor option).

    Assuming you were running 25’s with the original fork, I’d be amazed if you found any clearance issues with this one.

    Thanks Jack! I bought it yesterday in Condor shop directly. Supposed to arrive next week.

    Last question, I suspect clearance shouldn’t be an issue for 17c rim + 25 tyre. Tyre width is something like 26-27mm.

    The Condor fork isn’t on my master so I can’t make a direct comparison for you as the geometry and indeed size of the 1990’s Cougar it’s on are very different.

    They feel stiff enough and are comfortable over any distance. Taken from memory, the rake is the same as the norm for curved forks at 45mm. If Im honest, I didn’t really notice them being any different to any other high end steel fork I’ve ridden.

    Well worth the £150 if you can live without the pantographing on the crown.

    The problem that I have with eBay is that I need a relatively long steerer tube (close to 20cm) for 59cm frame, and there isn’t one that fits just yet. I’ll keep waiting for a bit. Condor also sounds like a good option.

    Jack, how does the fork feel? Is it lively (short rake) and comfortable? Or lively and stiff?

    For genuine Colnago forks,

    For genuine Colnago forks, get in touch with Mike Perry at Maestro. He may well be able to source threaded Precisa forks for you. Mike@maestro-uk.com

     

    For something close, Condor do a straight threaded fork in Columbus SLX. I have these and they’re very nice and apart from the Colnago embossing on the shoulders of the crown very similar.

     

    Otherwise, the advice above is spot on. Lots of used Precisa forks passing through eBay.

     

    Lastly, one thing you could investigate is having a threadless Precisa die cut to become a threaded Precisa fork.

    I thought about doing this when I was building my modern Master X-Light until I found a NOS 1″ Campag threadless headset (I wanted an all silver headset/stem & bars).

    I can’t think why you couldn’t do that, but I never verified it as an option with anybody with an expert opinion.
