Should I upgrade my wheels (Giant propel advanced 2)

    Hi just looking for some advice on a probably very tired topic. I’m very close to ordering a set of Wheelsmith race 38’s (http://www.wheelsmith.co.uk/powertap-c10at/race-38). But I keep hesitating and wondering whether I’ll notice much of a difference to the Giant PA2 30mm aero wheels that came with the bike, I think they weigh about 1780g.

    I’m 6’2 80kg avg speed for most rides is around 18.5-19.5mph, I live in the fens so don’t do all that much climbing.

    If these aren’t worth upgrading to are there any that are at this price point, or should I save for something better.

    I’d argue there is definately a transition phase, they take a little getting used too.  The only noticeable side effect for me is that I find I hold on tighter on windy days – with correspondingly sorer shoulders at the end of the day.

    I’ve been blown about with 20mm rim wheels. Once you get used to deeper rim wheels there is very little difference.

    I like nice light wheels and

    I like nice light wheels and tyres but to I honestly think you won’t notice much if any difference compared to your set up at the moment. Make sure you’re using good tyres if you’re not already. My personal preference GP4000S 25s.

    I upgraded my PA2s soon after

    I upgraded my PA2s soon after getting my Propel, but only because they were so badly built.  Both wheels were noticably untrue out of the box and required constant trueing right up until I binned them. Oh, and they weighed quite a bit too.  I eventually bought a pair of Campag Scirocco 35s as they were in the sale.  Did I notice much of an improvement?  Well, at least they run straight so don’t keep rubbing the brakes, they’re pretty much bombproof and they’re lighter, but in terms of increased speed, I can’t really say they’ve made a drastic improvement to my times (but then I don’t race).  They look very nice though!

    I bought myself a set of Hunt

    I bought myself a set of Hunt Aero50 Carbon disc (or whatever they call that exact model) last summer as I wanted a set of bling wheels to replace the DTSwiss ones that came with the bike.

     

    The new wheels are lighter, deeper and most importantly look ace.  Has that related to an objective increase in my speed? Not measurably to be honest – at least nothing that can be distinguished from my improving fitness.

    Does it make me look at my bike and want to ride it more? yeah 🙂

I have a TCR advanced 1 which has the same Giant stock wheels and was thinking the same last week (because clearly what everyone needs at the end of January is carbon race wheels….), I was looking at Hunt 50mm carbon for £980 but its a lot of cash for a potentially small upgrade? It would be an extra 20mm rim depth, wider by about 4mm and lighter by about 300g in total. They look very nice etc but are they going to show any tangible benefit?
