Bristol’s Valentine bridge: cycle or dismount?

Just seen a BristolPost article about the Balentine bridge behind Temple Meads station: http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/cyclists-ignore-signs-asking-dismount-876400

I often cycle over this as it’s quicker and easier for me to not dismount. Also, I take up less space going through the stupid chicane when I stay on my bike rather than walking alongside my bike.

How do other Bristolians navigate it?

According to the earlier story linked to in that article, the whole problem only arose because of damage caused by one of those new-fangled self-driving vehicles.

The bridge, which is only meant for pedestrians and cycles, was closed after a vehicle – understood to be a lorry – drove onto it by mistake, uprooting panels in the process.

This is why we need human drivers – had one been present they might have been able to prevent the lorry from making such a serious mistake.

It was probably following Asimov’s laws and preventing further harm to people from the cheese-grater surface.

    Clever lorry!

So, you’re the clown that did that. How long does it take to fix that bridge anyway? It’s been months and all they’ve done is remove the top surface so that they can get some quotes.

    Normal procedure:  try to

Normal procedure:  try to ride (it is normally early-doors on a Sunday when I go that way and there are no peds about), struggle to navigate the chicane,  fail to unclip in time, collapse on floor or against railings, swear, get up, walk across, pretend that’s what I intended all along…
