CF damage around cable hole (Rose)

    Well that’s one way to ruin my weekend.  I just noticed some damage to the CF around the hole in the downtube where the Di2 cable enters the frame.  It’s a Rose Xeon CDX which is a couple of years old and has been well looked after.  I’ve contacted the manufacturer for their thoughts, apparently the frame has a 6 year warantee which is good at least.

     

    I’ve attached some pictures, bearing in mind the stresses that go through the head tube/down tube I’m worried this means the frame is a write off.  Has anyone experienced anything similar?

    Rose CS have been great so far, they’re going to ship it back to Germany to inspect it properly – have said they’ll replace the frame if there is damage there.

    Looks like a paint chip to me. I had one like that on a Bianch a while back. I put a patch of heli tape over it to keep water out, and didn’t ever go anywhere in a couple of years more riding.

    Still waiting to hear back from Rose, but yeah – it’s nothing to do with a crash (this bikes never had any tumbles).

    Around the hole in the frame for the Di2 cable, it’s like some of the CF reinforcement has delaminated.  There’s a cresent shaped piece of CF which has come away from the frame leaving a small gap underneath.  The white highlighting is the bike wax acruing in there.  It’s got to be a sub-mm gap – I’ve obviously not tried to force it any wider.  When you run your finger over it, you can clearly feel a ridge there that isn’t present anywhere else on the frame or around any of the other holes.

    If it’s just superficial surface damage I’m not happy, but ok.  I’ve no idea about the CF layup though – if there’s a structural problem underneath which has caused some of the reinforcment to delaminate then that could be potentially catastrophic.

    It’s an expensive bike, costing around £2.7k. I wouldn’t be expecting any wear & tear issues with a CF frame on a fair weather bike thats 2 years old and has about 12k km on it.

    It’s hard to tell in amongst reflections, small scratches etc, but I think there may be an issue with a crack shaped like part of an elipse, just in front of the upper cable entry point (the one with the plug with a screw in it). If this is a failure it’s hard to imagine this is impact damage, although I suppose a severe impact on the cable might perhaps have something to do with it – perhaps when bars turned hard in a crash? Can’t be sure how much a crack here might compromise strength of frame as it could just be the lump around the cable delaminating or it could go right through.
