For brake pads – taking the glaze off.

Seeing as I’ll be heading to Toolstation for some thread lock, what kind of file should I be looking at? My current ones are nabbed from old toolboxes, have no handle and are past their best.

I use P120 sandpaper. Having blown a rim on a rear wheel I’ve become been especially careful to look after my rims and brake blocks. I keep meaning to get a hook and pick set to winkle out the little shards of rim fragment and other junk that the pads pick up. (Screwfix do a set by Teng.)  I’m not sure that a file is necessarily the best tool for the job.

Fine sandpaper (120 grit), have it on a flat surface, hold the pad flat on it, and then rub the pad across the sandpaper, not the other way round.

I think you’re overthinking this dottigirl. Any fairly fine to medium file would do the job perfectly.
