I hated my gabba – just didnt do it for me.

Get mudguards first of all – its rare that it rains all day but if you havent guards you’ll be soaking yourself for hours longer.

In summer I find a gilet enough to keep the rain out. Its too warm for a full jacket.

Depends on the sort of weather Steve wants to ride in.

I’ve got an old long-sleeved Gabba 2, and while it’s great in light rain, as soon as it picks up a bit, it gets saturated, and you end up very cold

Have paid a lot more for a lot worse.

I’d 2nd that recommendation…I have the original black Tourmalet.

The Tourmalet II in red is quite eyecatching for dull dreary wet days.

However, if you are more in the market for a Gabba type garment, then Galibier.cc’s

Mistral II foul weather (long sleeve) jacket, is more softshell jersey like in fit and feel…and <£70.

With a short sleeve version also available (Mistral Lite) for £55

Exactly my first thought! Waterproofs for a 5-mile commute will be different to your needs for a 50-mile wet weekend.

I would heartily recomend the Gore oxygen 2.0 jacket, still gets a bit sweaty, but nothing can be that breathable.  I tend to wear my pearl Izumi Softshell for most riding though.
