Replacement campag front mech?

    I have a 2006 ribble bike with a bent front mech (clamp on). It’s a campag mirage ct, and the bike is a 9 speed.

    I’ve searched online, and have found front mechs that look like they might be ok, but im reluctant to buy something that ‘might’ work! Are the more recent mechs compatible with something that’s now ten years old?

    Can someone point me in the direction of a suitable replacement?

    Aren’t all Campag 9-speeds compatible after they introduced the ’rounded’ ergo levers in about 2000?

    As luck would have it, i’ve found an identical (i think) front mech on ebay, so i’ll await it’s arrival and go from there..

    I’ve just returned to cycling after something around 8 years of being a lazy sod. So my 10 year old bike is still 10 years old, but with actually only a couple of year’s use. It’s going strong but i suspect i’ll only resist the temptation of a new bike for a short while…

    Your front mech was the last

    Your front mech was the last before Campag introduced the QS front shifting so you may have a problem if you try to use a later QS mech with your existing Ergopower levers. It’s not a big deal though according to this post from Graeme at Velotech. From what I’ve seen of posts from him in the past if there is a problem he’ll always point it out as they are an official Campag service centre so bodges are not encouraged. If in doubt you could always email them for advice.

    The other problem you’ll have with later mechs is that everything apart from Champ Triple went to 10 speed in 2007 (according to the 2007 spares manual). That means you may get a bit more chain rub because (if I remember correctly) there’s slightly less room between the inner and outer plates with a 10 speed front mech.

    I have a selection of Campag front mechs so I’ll check if any of them might be suitable for you. The one good thing I’ve found is that if you can’t find one with the right clamp size it’s an easy job to swap them over – it even works going from braze-on to clamp or vice-versa. What’s more the mounting design doesn’t seem to have changed from something like 2001 to present day for anything up to 10 speed.

    Make a note of the clamp size

    Make a note of the clamp size (measure the diameter of your seat tube) and just buy a second hand one from Ebay, same model.
