    Yes, really. Our cities are going to be bizarrely noisy places.  Why can’t people just look before they cross, or are cyclists going to be required to start singing as they ride?

    My car – when I have to drive – is a 1970 Beetle, and you can diagnose problems just by the engine noise (there’s a whole CD of it yes  – google John Muir Volkswagen sounds).

    When you have to ride in a modern car you can’t tell if the engine’s running: modern cars are too quiet, IMO.

    It’s not sound fx, it’s sound augmentation. Audi, BMW, VW, Ford, Porsche etc.  Almost every manufacturer has introduced it and they had to start with the high end to disguise the engine changes. Most owners know nothing about it, it’s come about just in the last few years and the industry doesn’t much like to publicise it.

    Are they going to change all the rules about not using your horn, too, to deal with this? Or maybe ban headphones so everyone has to walk around listening to a phone clipped to their belt like some teenager…?
