Where to stay/ride Andalucia

    Hi

    after a few years of (self organised) weekends in Mallorca, I’m considering Andalucia for a weekend climbing as much as possible.  It’s a big place so any advice on where to base ourselves much appreciated, been thinking of Alpujarras but would really want to do the el limite route.  Looking at just 3 days.

    ronda is very nice and great

    ronda is very nice and great access to the sierra de grazalema. there are some fairly serious hills (particularly with a 2 year old in a trailer) and the roads are quiet, well maintained and stunning. easy to get a train from malaga airport (change at the maria zambrano station). the white villages of zahara, benemahoma and grazalema are spectacular.

    We found a fab airbnb in Velez de Benaudalla which is an ace place to be based. Easy ride to the sea, not far from Grenada, and some smashing routes up into the hills – Trevelez (as above), Los Guajares (probably the nicest road I’ve ever ridden), Lagos, Cacín (a drive away), Rubite, Pinos del Valley, all of which you can ride from the town.
    It’s bloody hilly – we thought “we’ve ridden in the Alps, how hard can it be” and some of it was really quite hard. But SO good.

    There some fantastic rides to be had in the Alpajurras – all the roads around Pampaneira, Capileira,  Trevelez and that area are superb. Some great climbs, all on well-surfaced quiet roads. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay and a great guide then I can recommend Vamos Cycling . A few of us from my club spent a week with Gary and Sarah last year and were well looked after. I’m sure they could be flexible and accommodate you for a shorter stay.

    I road the El Limite this year, and you could spend a happy weekend based in Granada. There are a couple of fine routes up the Veleta to the ski station and beyond – although access to the final 5km is a bit hit and miss if it’s too hot / too cold / too windy. With a summit at 3400m it’s not somewhere to go in the wrong conditions. I thought the best route up was via Güejar Sierra – a bit steeper but more variety than the ‘main road’ climb. There’s also some good climbing around Monachil.

    I’ve also done a fair bit of riding around Mijas and the Costa Del Sol. There are some great climbs, like the Cerro del Moro, and (further inland) El Chorro, and El Torcal, but the roads tend to be a bit busier than up in the Alpajurras.
