Shoe help – starting to get fed up now

    Hi,

    I am having trouble finding a good set of shoes. My feet are slightly wider than normal. Currently I use a pair of Bont Vapour wide shoes with a pair of superfeet insoles. Before this I had a cheap pair of Mavic’s and the pain was the same. But after about 30 miles my feet are killing me, almost similar to hot foot syndrome.

    I have had a bike fit, moved the cleats to the front and back but to no avail. Currently using speedplay cleats, and tried several rides using Shimano SPD but this was worse.

    Getting to my wits end of this as it is disrupting my riding, especially on Sportive’s when I am sat on the side of the road with my shoes off rubbing my feet.

    The person who done the bike fit, said that the Boa’s on my Bonts are at the top of the side of the shoes and this may cause it. Looking at the Fizik R1b UOMO these are at the side -woudl this help?

    Any hep or guidance would be great.

    Install platforms and use

    Install platforms and use normal shoes – being careful to adjust your saddle height to account for the increased stack. If you still have problems, it’s related to you and/or your fit. If the problems go it’s the shoes.

    I found Bontrager XXX shoes

    I found Bontrager XXX shoes to be perfect for my wide feet.  Mega stiff and a very roomy toe box. The BOAs don’t seem to sit too high either.  Bontrager offer an unconditional returns thing which means you can try & return of you don’t get on with them.  I did a few rides in a bigger size but just returned them and got a smaller size which fitted.  Pricey but well worth it.

    I’ve had similar issues when trying to find new shoes too, having tried Giro Empires, Bont Vaypor S and Specialized Audax shoes in the past year. I’ve finally found the right shoes for me, a pair of Shimano RP-9s in the wide fit. None of the others were wide enough for my feet.

    My advice, if you’re not able to try the shoes in store, buy your shoes online from a supplier with a decent returns policy and be sensible about what feels right in terms of fit. If they don’t fit right, send them back! 

    I was able to return the Giros having realised that I would not ‘get used’ to the fit. My own foolish (and costly) mistake. 

    Hope this doesn’t sound like teaching you to suck eggs, but having wasted the best part of £600 on shoes, I’d rather pass on the lessons from my experiences!

    When you say bike fit…  I

    When you say bike fit…  I paid £50 for a cleat fit and it took an hour of fiddling about, sorted my knees out, worth every penny for me. I have no input on hot feet, but I do know there are a few ‘specialist fitting’ people out there who will look at your feet better than others.

    I’m using Sidis and they seem to acommodate wide foot quite well (I’ve got both long and wide foot – size 12). 

    They are stiff – I get some pains when I’m hammering it, coming from super stiff sole.

    I haven’t tried Fizik ones, but people say they are quite comfortable.
