Club kit etiquette

    So I’m being a bit of a coward and hiding this post in the member’s forum but anyway…!

    I am just interested in some opinions- this isn’t a “tell-me-what-to-do-so-I-can-do-right-by- the- Rules” posting. After a few years as a member, I am probably 95% certain I will be leaving my club for a few reasons. However obviously in that time I have bought lots of club kit which is quite expensive and I am interested in finding out how others managed when changing clubs. Do you still wear the kit even if you aren’t a member? If you spot ex-club members in kit how do you react?

    I will continue to wear it since it is wasteful otherwise. In the past I have witnessed people who are leaving selling their kit on the club FB page but to me that looked more like trying to make sure other people knew they are going rather than simply trying to get some money back.  Rather than flounce off I will just tell a few who need to know and quietly get my membership changed (hence hiding this post in here as opposed to putting it in the wider Road.cc forum).

     

    It may seem like a few silly questions but I know some clubs (including my current one) are quite traditionalist and protective of their kits and I am intrigued as to others views on the topic.

    The club I joined, as they weren’t really into timed or professional events etc were happy to be a ‘second claim team’ and had no issues with you wearing whatever. At the same time, part of the joining was that you got a jersey and were a member for life. So even though I haven’t been out with any of the team in about a year, I still wear my jersey and often give other riders wearing it a wave if I see them out.

    Yes, that is me. I made it as a joke after Si Richardsons comment last week. very surprised to see it make the cut!

    To be honest I am only posting here so other members of my club don’t see it- anyway since the Tour starts on Saturday I will keep it out of the public forum to allow the anonymous armchair pharmacologists more space to start their annual smear campaigns!

    If the clubs are local, personally I would think it was a bit weird.  Joining another club and still cycling in the previous clubs colours… Not bad, just weird.

    If the clubs are in different counties/countries, it would act as a good way to talk about the good memories you have from the previous club. So in that instance I would think its OK.

    I fully understand not wanting to waste the kit, if you have a wife like mine, its an absolute arse getting them to agree to spend money on cycling goods anyway.

    Me personally, I would sell it or put it in a frame as a memoir or keep as indoor training kit.

    My club members aren’t

    My club members aren’t precious about kit. The ‘club committee’ is a bit stringent about who can buy it – you’re not allowed to buy it unless you’re a paid up member. There are a couple of people who are in multiple clubs within the area who wear whatever kit they happen to be riding with that day. It is a bit weird though, seeing a club member in another clubs kit. 

    We are not football supporters, I would hope that the cycling world would be a lot less tribal than it would be of a man city supporter wearing a man united kit. Round by me (Midlands) the only way you’ll get jeered or sneered at kit wise is twofold 1) turning up to a bash wearing a full world tour pro team kit but not being a pro (less well known teams and foriegn national level are okay though- as it just shows you’ve been abroad) 2) wearing a loud kit – we have an annual ‘best dressed award’ at the club awards night (which is always a mickey take). 

    I suppose it’s really a matter of whether you’re comfortable wearing the kit or not. If I left a club I don’t think I’d feel good about sporting their colours. Personally I’d just put the word out to some people that you’ve got some kit for sale and ask about for anyone who might want to buy it. 

    Get some road.cc kit, looks good, is unusual, and lets everyone know that you’re a little more discerning than the average cyclist đŸ˜‰
