Got a decent free bike lock courtesy of British Transport Police

Not sure if you’re aware but Operation CycleSurgery (no relation) sees the British Transport Police visit various cycle theft hotspots at local stations and mark bikes with their details recorded on the BikeRegister. This alone would cost £20 if you did it yourself. If you’re lucky enough to get this done have a close read of the form and you’ll see info on there about a free lock – the officer will have a big box of Gold Standard U-locks which he can give out for free to encourage people to use two different types of lock on a bike thus making it harder for a thief to be in and out quickly.
The whole thing only took 5 minutes, they had the bike upside down to do the marking (pics here) and there was no patronising helmet talk or anything like that, just good old fashioned crime prevention work. Well done BTP!
