Roof mounted bike rack

Does anyone have any advice/experience with bike racks mounted on a car's roof bars? I have one of those which straps to the back and was pleased with it on my old car, but yesterday I realised it doesn't fit onto my new car (Hyundai i40 estate). The rack must fit my aluminium framed Bianchi and also the wife's shopping bike (http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/liv.giant.expression.dx.w/12364/58378/). It must be sturdy enough so that I can drive up the motorway without the fear the I'm going to lose the bikes, and also I don't want to pay a fortune for it.

Why not put the bikes in your
Why not put the bikes in your car? Save getting them wet and dirty and saves blasting the grease out of the bearings as you do 70mph on the motorway.

Buy two of these:

And fix them to a frame made out of this :

Works a treat. Only slight disadvantage is you have to take the seat and seatpost out to be able to get the bikes in.

You could dispense with the 561 altogether and just buy the frame extrusion and one of these:
