Shoe Nightmare – Some advice needed

    Hi,

    I have clearly have extremely awkward, wide feet. After trying on somewhere in the region of 20 (possibly more) different shoes, I am now down to two options..Shimano RO88 or Mavic Ksyrium Elite, both in wide fit. Both seem to be a very good fit with one main difference…the Shimano seem to have a lot of room for my toes to wiggle around in the toe box, whereas the Mavics are a more snug fit in the toe box more like a normal shoe.

    Can anyone advise whether it is better to have plenty of room in the toe box or have the more snug fit?

    I did also try a pair of Bont A2, but they are slightly uncomfortable and I am concerned about whether the oven moulding will do enough to make them comfortable!

    The toes shouldn’t be doing
    The toes shouldn’t be doing any of the supporting so I think they should have room to wiggle. The support and power transfer comes from the sole and top of the foot so this needs to be a snug fit for efficiency

    Thanks for the advice guys. I tried them on with my winter socks to try and compensate for any potential feet swelling, as well as the obvious amount of time winter socks need to be worn in the UK 😉 .

    The Mavics were too tight on the toes then and the Shimano’s were perfect (just like a good pair of shoes)!!

    So, the Shimano’s it is. I’ve been suffering with numb feet for the past 5 years, so I’m really hoping this is the final piece of the jigsaw to fixing that…fingers crossed!! 😀

    I would second that. Not only because he’s right. But because Mike Cotty is a legend (of endurance cycling so knows something about cycling shoes).

    You do want a good fit so when you pedal your foot is not sliding around. But there is no point getting something which is too small or tight. You’re going to spend all day in this and your feet have to feel happy. Basically a good pair of road shoes should fit like a good pair of shoes…..weird, but true.

    To be honest it’s probably personal preference. Provided both shoes fit well overall the choice is yours. It’s likely the snug fit will mold to your foot after a bit of use, like a good pair of slippers 😉 whereas if you have a lot of extra room then it may feel big and less supportive. Aside from this also consider if your feet swell in the heat over a long ride.
