Planet X slipping BB – customer services couldnt care less

    Hi All

    I purchased a carbon planet X track frame 4 years ago and have used it fairly regularly on the track – its not beet too bad, doesn’t flex much and I’ve won comps on it.

    My bottom bracket bearings died recently so I decided to change them last night but I found that the threaded sleeve built into the frame is slipping making it tricky to remove the bearings.

    When I spoke to customer services they couldn’t care less, as it was out of its 2 year warranty thus didnt want to know.

    My question is – should I expect this from a 4 year old carbon frame? Every time I have changed the bearings I have diligently used a torque wrench at the recommended torque.

    From a manufacturing side,
    From a manufacturing side, they have to show that their products are safe and also up to the task they are intended for, I don’t know the full legalities but I am an engineer for a car manufacturer and like in any manufacturing environment you have to show your products to be safe and capable of reasonable use in the public domain. 4 years is not an unreasonable length of time to expect a bike to last.

    You can wreck a bottom
    You can wreck a bottom bracket within warranty – I have a torque wrench and know how to use it.

    Whilst the bike had a 2 year warranty one typically expects it to last longer than that, this has had track use, no crashes and yes I DO expect a bike to last longer than 4 years

    To be fair I was warned that the frame quality on Planet X bikes was not good…

    2 years is 1 year longer than
    2 years is 1 year longer than you get for most goods! For all Planet X know you could crashed the bike, over torqued the bearings or damaged it some other way. I don’t think that any frame suppliers would repair a frame that is out of warranty.

    I would persue the matter,
    I would persue the matter, this should come under the sale of goods act and sale for intened use and there is the reasonable service life as well. 2 years isn’t very long for a warranty.
