Help me with picking a new frame

    Ok,

    I’m looking at upgrading/replacing my existing Ribble New Sportive Racing frame as I’d like something a bit more racey (if that’s the right way to describe it) but still want to be able to do 50 – 80 mile rides at the weekend and not feel like I’ve went ten rounds in the ring by the end of it.

    The problem I’ve got is I just don’t really know what to look at or consider as the Ribble was my first decent road bike. I’ve come close to picking up a Kenesis Aithien or a Scott CR1 I’d seen on offer, although not convinced the Scott is what I’m after.

    Suggestions would be appreciated. I’ve got a budget of £800 and I’d need to be able to just transfer over my existing Campag Veloce kit to the new frame as I’ll upgrade this over time.

    Requirements are very wide
    Requirements are very wide for a frame and there are many many brands and types.
    Here are some things to think about, some will be obvious others not so, but all may have an impact now or in the future:

    Budget – £800
    Geometry – Sounds like you want a ‘sportive type’ frame, rather than a very low front end race bike or a touring bike.
    Your Weight? (Some frames have weight limits)
    Wheel size (presume ISO 622 (700c), but worth checking)?
    Mudguards (would you want to put full length guards on in winter)?
    Rackmounts (would this ever end up being used for touring or commuting)?
    Tyre clearance?
    Disc or non-disc?
    Brake placement?
    Brake type (I think veloce is single bolt brake bridge mount?)?
    Would you buy long drop brakes if your new frame required them?
    Frame material?
    Fork material?
    Purpose (e.g. ‘Aero’, ‘Comfort’, ‘Lightweight’)?
    Internal or external cable routing?
    electric and mechanical or mechanical only cabling (for future upgrading as veloce is mechanical)?
    Bottom bracket preferences?
    Wheel spacing (do you have current wheels you want to use again)?
    Axle type?
    Band on or braze on front derailleur?
    Seat post type?
    Colours?
    Brand?
    Headset type?
    Toe overlap important?

    I’ve sat on a Scott before it
    I’ve sat on a Scott before it was replaced with the Solace and quite liked it, my apprehension with it is it’ll be a bit like what I already have in that it’s more aimed at the sportive type of bike and not more racey.

    The Aithein, I like the look of and the geo looks like what I’m after but I can’t get a test ride at my LBS.

    In terms of my LBS both only stock the big brands, Giant, Trek, Cannondale none of which I’m particularly looking at although the CAAD10 is an option for me after although with the Cannondale’s I’m between a 54 and 56 so I’m not sure what would be better but if that ended up being my choice I’d pop down and see if I can try one of the pre-built ones.

    I can live with some road buzz but don’t want to feel battered during or after a longer ride.

    What is it about the models
    What is it about the models you’re considering that’s tempting you? How do you know they could be the one?

    Get down to your LBS and try things out for fit and feel. Travel further afield to try things more exotic if need be. Ask other riders for ‘a go on theirs’. Read reviews and drool over ads here, there, and elsewhere for sure but there’s no substitute for a test ride.
