Handlebar gel pads: any point?

Specifically, with thin bar tape, should I try some gel pads?

I stumped up for the Brooks Cambium bar tape to match the saddle, and it’s like the cloth tape of yesteryear! I normally ride with Cinelli and was surprised that thin tape would be acceptable to anyone, any more. Except for retro bikes or hipsters.

As my gloves are gel anyway, I’m unsure if I should just try it, but I hate putting bar tape on, and at this price, I’d be rather annoyed if I snapped it while messing about.
