mods to a marin 29er alpine trail

Hi I have a cunning plan but would like some advice i plan to start training and doing some long distance rides but have been told my bike is less than ideal budget dictates i have to make do ! my question is how easy is it to modify the bike ie gear ratio. Tyres are not an issues thanks also any advice on training would be helpful .
